I am looking for one PhD student and potentially a second grad student (Masters or PhD) to start in the Fall of 2024 in SUNY ESF’s graduate program in environmental science. Potential student should be interested broadly cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural community-engaged research for environmental and water justice with Indigenous Nations of the Great Lakes and New York. Specific projects could include data and collaboration ethics and protocols, as well as environmental data analysis regarding pipeline impacts, Manoomin/Psiη (wild rice) caretaking, or other projects centering water or beings of concern for communities you are connected to. Please reach out to Maddy if you are interested or have questions (mlnyblad@esf.edu).
Who I am: I am an Environmental Studies professor in the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). I am settler from central Pennsylvania with a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. I also completed a graduate minor in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. For my dissertation, I studied the hydrologic impacts of climate and land-use change on Manoomin/Psiη (Wild Rice) ecosystems as part of a tribal-university research collaboration.
I aim to honor and respect Indigenous sovereignty through my teaching and research. I oppose research that does not involve meaningful Indigenous consultation and consent including the cultivated wild rice breeding and genetics research program at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (see the resources tab for more information). Through my work, I strive to educate people about respecting Indigenous sovereignty within their scientific practice.
